# Arcane
Setup guide for Arcane on Dark and Darker.

**Restart your PC before you run Arcane.** This is mandatory, not a suggestion. Do not use Arcane on your main account.

### Before you start
Arcane will refuse to load until all of this is done:
* Uninstall any third-party antivirus, and turn off **Windows Defender** and **SmartScreen**
* Uninstall **FACEIT** and **Riot Vanguard**. Disabling them is not enough
* Disable **Intel Rapid Storage Technology** in your BIOS
* Enable virtualisation in your BIOS (**Intel VT-X**, or **AMD-V** / **SVM Mode**), and disable **Hyper-V** inside Windows. These sound like the same setting and are opposites
* Restart your PC
* Have the **Visual C++ redistributable** installed. Most people already do

### Set up your overlay
Arcane draws its menu through the SteelSeries Sonar overlay, so it has to be set up before you start. It works with any graphics card.
1. Install [SteelSeries GG](https://steelseries.com/gg/downloads/gg/latest/windows)
2. Go to **Settings > Moments > Capture and Sound** and disable **Allow Moments to capture while gaming**
3. Go to **Overlay and Notifications** and disable **Display game overlays**
4. Enable **Sonar** in General Settings
5. Under **SONAR**, set a shortcut key for the Sonar overlay, for example Master Volume Up
6. Press that shortcut every time before you launch the loader

### Download the loader
Download the Arcane loader and put it in a folder of its own.

### Run it as administrator
Right-click the loader and select **Run as administrator**. It will update itself and close, so run it again once it does.

### Enter your key
Type or paste your key and press **Enter**. The loader is a command prompt window, so paste with **right-click**, not Ctrl+V.

### Choose the optional extras
The loader asks two questions. Answer **Yes** to clean your traces, and **Yes** if you want the HWID spoofer.

### Launch the game
The loader closes on its own once it has loaded. Start the game and the menu will appear automatically.

### Menu keys

| `END` | Unload Arcane |
### If Arcane will not load
Run the [Support Tool](/getting-started/support-tool.md) first. It clears the usual causes in one click: antivirus, Windows Defender, SmartScreen, anti-cheats, Hyper-V and the Visual C++ runtimes. What is left is specific to Arcane.
| Error | Fix |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Please enable Intel VT-X in the BIOS** or **Please enable AMD-V in BIOS** | Enable **Intel Virtualization Technology**, or **AMD-V** / **SVM Mode**, in your BIOS |
| **Please disable secure boot in the BIOS** | Turn Secure Boot off in your BIOS |
| **Secure boot keys are incorrect** | Enable Secure Boot and save. Run `Confirm-SecureBootUEFI` in PowerShell until it prints `True`, then reboot and turn Secure Boot back off |
| **Unsupported firmware** | Convert the disk holding Windows to GPT with the built-in `mbr2gpt` tool |
| **AES instruction set is not supported** | Your CPU cannot run Arcane and it cannot be fixed. Contact us for a refund |
| **Failed to map memory** | Arcane needs at least **12 GB of RAM**. If you have that, disable your startup programs and reboot |
| **Incorrect HWID** | Run `wmic diskdrive get Caption, SerialNumber` and `wmic baseboard get SerialNumber` as administrator. If either fails, Windows needs reinstalling |
**If the menu will not show, or will not click**
* Start Steam **without** administrator rights, and turn off any overlay other than the one Arcane uses
* Playing through the EA App? Disable its overlay in the app settings
* Menu gone after a game update? Wait for Arcane to update, then verify your game files
* **AMD only:** if the loader complains about libraries, close every AMD process in Task Manager, replace the DLLs in `C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\CNext` with the ones Arcane supplies, then restart AMD Software with the performance display enabled
An error mentioning your Windows sign-in PIN means you need to remove the PIN and password from your account. If that does not clear it, open a ticket rather than following Arcane's own fix for it, which deletes Windows system files.
